刘锡永(1914.7—1973.7)字祚胤,祖籍山西,世居北京,擅长国画、古装连环画。早年师从徐燕孙,1935年毕业于北京京华美术学院。1935年至1942年任教师,以后在北京、天津、上海等地开个人画展,1951年在上海建文出版社、新美术出版社工作,1959年调广西艺术学院任讲师。解放后,专门从事连环画创作。所作山水人物俱佳,代表作有《瓦岗寨》、《鸳鸯冢》、《济公斗蟋蟀》、《鸳鸯抗婚》、《虎牢关》、《长坂坡》、《赤壁大战》和《二士争功》。

刘锡永,1914年7月5日出生于山西太原。1917年随全家搬迁来到北京,1921年,刘锡永进入北京师大附属小学读书,童年的刘锡永就对绘画十分的感兴趣,课余时间经常进行绘画练习。1927年8月小学毕业后,他于同年9月进入北京市立四中读中学。1931年9月,刘锡永考入北京京华美术学院中国画系,师从徐燕孙、齐白石、邱石冥、吴镜汀等绘画大师学习国画绘画艺术,学生时代的刘锡永学习刻苦,经常到北京故宫等地临摹唐、宋、元、明、清代等诸名家的作品,达到废寝忘食的程度,因此,打下了扎实的传统绘画功底。所作山水和人物俱佳,在校学习期间成绩优秀。1938年毕业后,被校方挽留留校教书,后任助教。1937年2月至1942年12月,受聘担任京剧“四大名旦”之一荀慧生的国画教师,受荀慧生影响,刘锡永也渐渐喜欢上京剧,成为荀慧生的幕友和票友,并常常为他代笔应酬。
1938年,刘锡永首次在京举办个人美术画展,获得画界的一致好评。逐渐奠定其在绘画领域的地位和影响。
1943年至1948年间,刘锡永又先后在北京、天津、上海等地举办过七次个人画展,盛况空前,观者如潮,影响力与日俱增。1948年底,刘锡永在天津举办完最后一次个人美术画展后,随举家南迁,前往上海生活定居。期间创作了不少国画。1948年到1949年初,刘锡永先后又在上海和杭州开办过两次个人美术画展。这一时期刘锡永的绘画技艺和技法日趋成熟,渐渐形成自己的绘画风格。
新中国时期
1949年上海解放后,刘锡永在上海也迎来了自己的艺术春天。1951年刘锡永进入建文出版社工作,担任连环画创作员。正式开始为上海滩的私营出版机构绘画插图和连环画。这也是刘锡永正式开始进行连环画创作。先后为电化教育出版社和建文出版社绘画了《人民的海军》、《马特洛索夫式的英雄-黄继光》、《中朝人民团结紧》等紧跟历史时代和潮流的连环画。1952年上海滩多家私营出版机构合并成立新美术出版社,刘锡永于1952年8月进入新美术出版社工作,担任连环画创作员。由于他擅长古装人物画的绘画,随和胡若佛、汪玉山、严个凡、林雪岩、钱笑呆、陈光镒等画家为一组,专门从事古典题材连环画的创作。
期间创作大量古典题材连环画作品和国画作品,如:《香罗带》、《白蛇传》、《鸳鸯冢》、《偷渡阴平》、《济公斗蟋蟀》等一大批连环画,出版后获得读者的好评和喜爱。在创作古典题材连环画的同时,刘锡永还进行了现代题材和外国题材、少儿题材等其他题材连环画的创作。先后创作有《一个志愿军战士的未婚妻》、《女电话员》、《越早越好》、《暴风骤雨》、《三千里江山》、《我们这里已是早晨》、《郭全海》等连环画,同样引起读者的关注。1954年8月他随新美术出版社一起并入上海人民美术出版社,仍担任连环画创作员。继续创作连环画。
1957年上海人民美术出版社策划大型历史连环画《三国演义》,刘锡永是造型组成员,并为《三国演义》连环画套书绘制了其中的《虎牢关》、《长坂坡》、《赤壁大战》、《二士争功》等四册连环画。是《三国演义》连环画套书中绘画较多的画家,刘锡永运用自己娴熟的绘画技艺很好的表现了《三国演义》中的这几个关键故事的内容,至今给读者留下难忘的印象。同时期,刘锡永还先后参加了《红楼梦》、《西游记》、《说唐故事》、《东周故事》、《岳飞传》等一系列连环画的绘画工作。1958年刘锡永为人民大会堂广西厅绘画的《刘三姐》、《黑旗军》等国画作品,悬挂在广西厅。达到了他的绘画艺术顶峰。
1958年为响应国家支援边远省市美术事业发展,刘锡永举家迁来广西南宁市,先在广西壮族自治区文化局工作。1959年6月,刘锡永调入广西艺术学院任教,任美术系教师,享受副教授待遇。在广西艺术学院任教期间他以深厚的绘画艺术底蕴、扎实的中国画传统功底和严肃认真负责的教学精神,为广西培养和造就了一大批美术人材,可谓桃李满天下。在紧张的教学同时,他还经常抽出时间深入壮乡体验生活,进行艺术采风。文革前,刘锡永在北京和南宁举办过两次个人画展。1966年文革运动爆发,刘锡永一度中断创作,许多美术作品在文革中丢失。1973年7月18日刘锡永因病逝世于南宁市,享年60岁。
